Together with Mathieu Sperandio, they decided to refocus the SYMBIOSE team\u2019s research on recovering the materials contained in wastewater (water, phosphorus, metals, biopolymers) rather than simply treating it \u2014 and in doing so became pioneers in France. He also works to foster a sustainable partnership with industry and to facilitate technology transfer via the <a href=\"https:\/\/gpte.critt.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CRITT GPTE<\/a>, with whom the team works in \u2018symbiosis\u2019.<\/p><p>Cette conviction de l&rsquo;importance d&rsquo;une recherche-action, Etienne la doit aussi \u00e0 un parcours qui l&rsquo;a tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t confront\u00e9 au monde industriel : un stage chez Sanofi Lab\u00e8ge en 1990 puis une th\u00e8se consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 une bact\u00e9rie utilis\u00e9e pour stimuler la croissance des cultures, en lien avec un semencier toulousain. Pass\u00e9 par INSA Transfert aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s du professeur Capdeville, il apprend le m\u00e9tier avant de le transmettre \u00e0 son tour, en dirigeant l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe Symbiose pendant quinze ans, puis en en confiant les r\u00eanes \u00e0 Mathieu en 2009.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Now head of the GMB<a href=\"#1\" target=\"_self\">\u00b9<\/a> division at TBI, he strives to maintain and promote this discipline both within TBI and beyond. As a lecturer in the GP3E<a href=\"#1\" target=\"_self\">\u00b2<\/a> department at INSA Toulouse, he continues to passionately share with fourth- and fifth-year students the knowledge he has gained not only from research but also from the world of industry. He encourages students who are still hesitant to embark on a PhD.<\/p><p>In a year\u2019s time, Etienne will retire. Without hesitation and without taking up an emeritus post: in his view, research is too all-consuming a profession to allow for a proper break. And he has other things he wants to experience.
